“What kind of clients do you usually work with?”
You want someone who understands career changes, not just promotions.
“Have you helped people switch industries or careers before? Can you give an example?”
Success stories = proof they know what they’re doing.
“What’s your general basic coaching process?”
Good coaches will have a structure but are flexible too.
“How do you measure progress?”
Are there clear milestones or goals?
“How do you tailor coaching to someone’s specific situation?”
You want someone who adapts to you, not someone using a cookie-cutter plan.
“What happens if I realize I want a totally different path during coaching?”
Determine if they will help you pivot or if they only push you toward one type of job.
“How do you support clients between sessions?”
Some offer quick check-ins, email support, and resume edits and that's a bonus.
“Have you made a career change yourself?”
It is quite helpful if they've been in your situation and walked the path you’re on. They'll understand how you're feeling and what the challenges are.
Pro Tip: After asking a few of these questions, pay close attention to not just what they say, but how they say it. Are they excited for you? Supportive? Strategic? Do they get you? Do you feel a connection? Those are green flags :)
